On June 19th, Bedspace travelled to Westminster to meet with Ann Coffey MP, to discuss the 16-18 supported accommodation sector for vulnerable young people. We discussed the risks of poor quality accommodation, the potential of child sexual and criminal exploitation, and a lack of support for those young people in most need.

Bedspace is in favour of greater regulation in this sector, to drive up standards and ensure all young people are able to live in safe, welcoming homes with the right level of support for their needs. For this, we need to encourage greater planning for move-on and better involvement of young people, to consider their wishes and feelings. Local authorities need to pay fair prices to ensure housing and support standards remain high. Providers need to be vetted to ensure accommodation is safe, clean and modern, and that staff are trained and DBS checked.

Bedspace, and other quality providers of housing and support, have the knowledge, skills and compassion to be part of this solution. Let’s work together to keep young people safe, while providing them with the support and skills they need for future independent living. We thank Ann for her time, and appreciate her tireless work in seeking solutions to support those young people in most need.
